The idea for the terrace grew from a smaller tile panel based on a map of the area surrounding the railway arches in Blenheim Grove. “Over The Arches” formed part of a series of pieces produced for a solo show in Holland Park called “Road Works”. The original version was made in brick clay to reflect the urban area, and focused on the abstract patterns created by blocks of buildings, and the road and rail networks that access them. The orientation and scale of this road network was carefully chosen to interact with the elevations and planes of the shop façade. The presence of the large London plane tree on the corner of the site filters light onto the terrace creating, in the right conditions, a sense of movement across the map. The curved blocks representing the railway echo the tree roots that weave their way underneath. The terrace is based on the Geographers A-Z map and is reproduced with kind permission of The Ordnance Survey.
In essence the terrace is composed of the local road network laid out in five different coloured cobbles. Some of the pale cobbles were individually glazed to reflect the tiled façade of the shop. Over two hundred individually carved or cast hand-made bricks depicting architectural and transient details of the locale are inlaid at the appropriate points on the map. The glazed relief details, mapped over a period of two months are fossilized into the hand-made bricks to form a treasure hunt. The aim being an invitation to explore the Bellenden area for the architectural jewels and everyday details which make this area unique. |
